Tom Holland‘s web-slinging superhero domestic gross now appears far ahead of Sony’s projection for Sunday of opening weekend. There is also, however, another reason for the team to celebrate this spectacular opening debut.
The all-time biggest domestic opening weekend at the box office list is filled with some superstar contenders. But, there is a brand new title topping the list. Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s debut numbers have been adjusted to show that it will surpass Avengers: Endgame, previously leading the way.
From 4487 North American screens, Sony Pictures‘ new film earned $360 million in Monday actuals. This beats the $355 million that the studio had originally projected with its Sunday estimates. The extra $5 million puts Brand New Day ahead of Avengers: Endgame from its previous high of $357.1 million in its domestic opening back in April 2019. For years, it was believed that these numbers from 2019 would never be beat. However, Endgame still holds the higher worldwide opening weekend with $1.2 billion, as our 2026 contender only claims $932 million.
With Tom Holland and Zendaya leading the way, the movie has proved itself to be a staggering success story. Setting records not only for opening weekend, but for biggest Thursday previews as well as top Friday opening domestic totals too. It becomes Sony’s most supreme launch.
Before opening weekend, Sony’s predictions had been less special with only $195 million domestic and $465 million global. Still putting the film among the top 10 all-time debuts. Marvel Studios producers and Amy Pascal have said the film carries a $225 million production budget.
Chief of Sony Pictures, Tom Rothman, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he focused his attention on the audiences’ reaction, rather than whether the movie breaks the record. Stating, “There are many, many, many people going to see the movie. What’s far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That’s way more important to me than this record or that record.”
Proven itself to be a crowd-pleaser, it has earned an A CinemaScore from audiences and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes – though its critics’ score is slightly lower, at 90%. Viewers’ ages appear lower and male. 36% of the audience fell between ages 18 and 24, and 61% of them were men.
IMAX changes the game with its announcement that beginning Monday it will change course and have split screenings of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Ahead of December’s release of Avengers: Doomsday, Spidey has given them new momentum. A new release which will also not be screening on IMAX in its debut.
Centering on the Marvel Comics’ signature hero Spider-Man, the film follows him as he leads a lonely life without any loved ones around him. All before an invisible enemy tracks him down. From Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director, Destin Daniel Cretton, the film also stars Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo.
Previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home opened with $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide back in December 2021. The film now falls from its standing as the No. 2 highest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever, thanks to Brand New Day. The 2021 success of No Way Home was originally expected to be tough to replicate with the buzzy appearances of past Peter Parkers. With Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, along with its prior lack of theatrical competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic just calming down.
Last weekend at the box office, for all films, estimated to hit a collected $430 million. This represents the biggest domestic frame ever, overtaking the $402.1 million that occurred during the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. This gave 2026 a 15.2% increase over last year’s total to this point.
