Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man just delivered one of the wildest box office weekends in Marvel history — and it did it without a single Avenger on screen. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to an estimated $355 million domestically, landing as the second-biggest opening weekend of all time and missing Avengers: Endgame’s 2019 record of $357.1 million by a razor-thin $2 million.
Where Spidey did make history outright: opening day. The film’s Thursday-through-Friday haul of $168 million topped Endgame’s previous opening-day record of $157.4 million, giving Sony bragging rights even in defeat on the weekend total. Overseas, the film added $573 million, pushing its worldwide total to a staggering $927 million after just three days — putting the billion-dollar mark within easy reach this week.
The numbers are especially notable given the rocky year comic book movies have had. Thunderbolts, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps all underperformed, and Supergirl failed to carry forward Superman’s momentum. Brand New Day reversed that narrative in a single weekend, backed by a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, an A CinemaScore, and five-star PostTrak ratings.
All eyes now turn to December, when Avengers: Doomsday — reuniting a roster that includes several actors from this year’s underperforming MCU entries, plus Robert Downey Jr. returning not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom — attempts to reclaim the crown Spidey came so close to taking. Until then, Peter Parker holds the higher ground.
