Spanish striker Ferran Torres has said that his MAGA-inspired ‘Make Spain Great Again’ cap, which he wore during Spain’s recent World Cup celebrations, was not a political move and “just to have fun”.
A day after winning the World Cup with his team against Argentina, Spanish football star Ferran Torres was seen wearing a red cap with the words ‘Make Spain Great Again’ during the victory parade in Madrid.
Many believed this was in reference to US President Donald Trump’s slogan and a nod to the ‘Make America Great Again’ cap he is often seen wearing.
But in a recent interview with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, Ferran Torres was asked about the red cap and what it meant for him, he said: “It was a funny moment because it was not about politics”.
“Honestly I don’t know about politics, it was just to be able to see Spain on top again, winning the World Cup and having fun with my friends and family”, the Valencian player added.
Following Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final, in which Ferran Torres scored the winning goal, the White House wrote a Tweet on social media platform X in reference to the footballer’s hat saying: “Everyone wants to be part of the movement”.

News channels such as Fox News also popularised the theory that Torres was a Trump supporter because of his chosen headgear.
In fact, Ferran is not the only famous Spaniard to have worn a similar MAGA-style hat.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was also seen wearing one saying ‘Make Science Great Again’ back in March of this year in a TikTok video.
Conversely though, Sánchez’s move was political and in direct defiance of Donald Trump. In the video, Sánchez was seen as saying: “Vamos a darle caña”, an expression in Spanish which in this context could translate as “we’re going to give them hell” or “we’re going to give it our all”.
This was in reference to the spat between Trump and Sánchez over the Spain’s refusal to contribute 5 percent of its GDP to defence and NATO as Washington had demanded.
Later, the Spanish government also refused to allow the US military to launch missile attacks from its military bases in Andalusia (Morón and Rota).
This led Donald Trump to threaten to sever all trade with Spain.
“Spain has been terrible,” Trump said when the news broke. “So we’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain.”
Just last week, Trump criticised Spain again for allowing thousands of migrants into Ceuta.
“It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,” Trump told Fox News.
