The Major League Baseball trade deadline took place on Monday, and the Blue Jays acquired three key players. They were starting pitchers Spencer Arrighetti and Jose Soriano, and second baseman Josh Smith according to ESPN.
Arrighetti was traded from the Houston Astros to the Blue Jays for outfielder Daulton Varsho on Monday. Arighetti is joining his second MLB team after three seasons with the Astros. This season he had a record of seven wins and five losses with an earned run average of 4.60. During 88 innings pitched, Arrighetti gave up 68 hits, 45 earned runs, 12 home runs and 50 walks, to go along with 87 strikeouts, six quality starts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.34.
Soriano was traded from the Los Angeles Angels to the Blue Jays for minor league shortstop Arjun Nimmala, minor league starting pitcher Angel Rivero and right fielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. Soriano is joining his second MLB team after four seasons with the Angels. This season he had a record of nine wins and six losses with an earned run average of 3.29. During 123 innings pitched, Soriano gave up 97 hits, 45 earned runs, 12 home runs, and 57 walks, to go along with 127 strikeouts, eight quality starts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.25.
Smith was traded from the Texas Rangers to the Blue Jays with minor league pitcher Josh Stephan for relief pitcher Adam Macko. Smith is joining his second MLB team after five seasons with the Rangers. This season, he batted .213 with one home run and eight runs batted in. During 45 games, 136 at bats and 154 plate appearances, Smith scored eight runs and had 29 hits, three doubles, one triple, three stolen bases, 16 walks, 37 total bases, one sacrifice fly, an on base percentage of .299 and a slugging percentage of .272. Smith’s sacrifice fly came in a 5-1 Rangers win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 23, and his home run came in a 10-4 Rangers win over the Detroit Tigers on July 2.
