The Guardians are promoting top prospect Angel Genao, reports Yancen Pujols. The 22-year-old is already on Cleveland’s 40-man roster, as the Guardians selected his contract to keep him out of last winter’s Rule 5 draft. They will need to make an active roster move.
Genao, a 22-year-old infielder, has had an excellent year in the upper minors. The switch-hitter began the season at Double-A, where he reached base at a .418 clip through early May. Genao hasn’t slowed down since being bumped up to Triple-A Columbus, where he’s hitting above .300 with nearly as many walks as strikeouts in 71 games.
Between the two affiliates, Genao has an excellent .299/.400/.458 batting line over 413 plate appearances. He’s walking at a huge 14.3% clip against a 16% strikeout rate, showing a disciplined approach with strong contact ability. Genao has connected on 11 home runs, 20 doubles, and a triple while going 11-15 in stolen base attempts.
Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2021, Genao has consistently performed well and moved up prospect rankings as he’s climbed the minor league ladder. Baseball America, Keith Law of The Athletic, MLB Pipeline and Eric Longenhagen/Brendan Gawlowski of FanGraphs all have him as one of the top 40 prospects in the game. He’s as high as 11th and 14th, respectively, on the FanGraphs and The Athletic lists. Those outlets both consider him the top talent in Cleveland’s system.
Genao doesn’t have the flashiest physical tools for an elite prospect. It’s more of a well-rounded profile without huge weaknesses. He has a balanced offensive approach and hits the ball fairly hard. He performs well from both sides of the plate and is expected to stick up the middle. The only minor concern is an extreme ground-ball heavy approach, which is conducive to hitting for average but will likely sacrifice some of his game power barring a swing adjustment.
The Guardians have Travis Bazzana locked in at second base. Shortstop Brayan Rocchio has had a productive season overall but has gone cold offensively since the beginning of June. Genao should take the starting shortstop job and push Rocchio to a utility role in time.
It’s unclear if that’s the immediate plan, though, as the Guards sat José Ramírez on Tuesday due to left wrist inflammation. If he needs to miss time, Genao could break in at third base. He doesn’t have a ton of experience there but has logged a little over 500 minor league innings at the hot corner, including 14 starts this season. The alternative would be to play Gabriel Arias without much hope of getting any offense.
Genao will be under club control for six full seasons after this one if he’s up for good (assuming no changes to the service time structure in the CBA). He would accrue more than 45 days of MLB service time if he holds his roster spot through year’s end, which would take him out of consideration for the Prospect Promotion Incentive in 2027. Any optional assignments back to Triple-A could change both outcomes.
