Yankees To Promote George Lombard Jr.

The Yankees are set to select the contract of top prospect George Lombard Jr., according to Jack Curry of YES Network.  New York has an open 40-man roster spot already available, plus the Yankees announced tonight that Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, and Angel Chivilli were all being optioned to Triple-A.  This clears 26-man roster room for both Lombard and Heliot Ramos, who was picked up in a trade with the Giants today.

Lombard was promoted to Triple-A in late April and has hit .268/.405/.440 with six homers and 10 steals over 262 plate appearances for Scranton Wilkes-Barre.  It is quite possible Lombard would’ve already made his MLB debut if it wasn’t for a finger sprain that sidelined him for about a month from mid-June to mid-July, but with the trade deadline come and gone, Lombard is now ready for his first taste of the Show.

Selected 26th overall in the 2023 draft, Lombard has become a fixture on top-100 lists over the last couple of years.  He was in the top half of preseason rankings from The Athletic’s Keith Law (who had Lombard 20th), ESPN.com (24th), MLB Pipeline (32nd) and Baseball America (48th).  In-season updates have seen Lombard jump to 13th on BA’s list and 20th on Pipeline’s list.

Volpe’s struggles are a cautionary reminder that Bronx fans shouldn’t automatically expect Lombard or any blue-chip prospect to instantly take the majors by storm.  That said, Volpe and Jose Caballero each haven’t hit much this season and evaluators feel Lombard should at least a very solid defensive shortstop at the MLB level, so the Yankees don’t have much to lose in giving Lombard a shot at some regular playing time.

Between his defense, speed, and ability to draw walks, Lombard looks to have a pretty high floor as a regular player.  His approach at the plate has been generally praised by evaluators and he has shown an ability to make consistent hard contact and to hit for power.  Catching up to fastballs in the zone or on the high end of the zone was cited as a flaw by both the Pipeline and BA scouting reports, but Lombard has shown some good year-to-year improvement by posting better walk and strikeout rates in 2026 than in 2025.

Assuming that Lombard stays in the 26-man roster for the rest of the season, he’ll shed his rookie eligibility this year, and thus he won’t be eligible for any Prospect Promotion Incentive bonus picks for the Yankees in 2026.  Lombard almost surely is coming up too late to really factor into the Rookie of the Year race, as well.

The call-up therefore appears to be more of a traditional baseball move from a team that needs some help at shortstop.  Lombard’s presence kept the Yankees from looking too much into any shortstop options at the trade deadline, and ideally his right-handed bat could provide some of the balance New York has been trying to find within its lineup heavy in left-handed hitters.
