The Mets announced Saturday that they’ve selected the contract of righty Kevin Herget from Triple-A Syracuse. New York had an open roster spot after trading lefty A.J. Minter to the Twins earlier in the week. Righty Xzavion Curry, who tossed five innings in long relief last night and wouldn’t have been available for several days as a result, was optioned to Syracuse to open an active roster spot.
Herget, 35, has pitched in parts of four big league seasons, including 12 innings (3.00 ERA) with the Mets in 2025. He’s worked a total of 55 2/3 frames in the big leagues and has a 4.20 earned run average, 13.7% strikeout rate, 6% walk rate and 34.1% ground-ball rate.
Herget spent a good chunk of the 2026 season on the minor league injured list but is healthy now and pitching decently. He’s tossed 13 2/3 innings and held opponents to six runs on 17 hits and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts. In parts of nine seasons at the Triple-A level, he’s tossed 522 2/3 innings with a 3.96 ERA and strong rate stats. Herget isn’t going to blow anyone away with velocity, sitting 92.3 mph in his career with the four-seamer (and 90-91 mph in the minors this year), but he has strong command and generally does a nice job avoiding hard contact.
The Mets will presumably have several more bullpen moves up their sleeves in the next few days. Left-hander Brooks Raley, a free agent at season’s end, is all but certain to be traded. They’re also getting strong interest in setup man Luke Weaver, who’s having a career-best season, and drawing inquiries in right-hander Huascar Brazoban. Minter and (much earlier in the summer) David Peterson are the only players New York has traded away so far, but they’ll be active in dismantling an immensely disappointing roster over the next 53 hours as the trade deadline approaches.
