Melissa Lavigne has done a lot of kayaking on the St.  John River in Fredericton. But recently, as she explored the shoreline on the city’s south side, she came across a couple of grave discoveries, one with a possible link to a passenger on the Mayflower. Lavigne found a headstone and a grave marker for two different men, buried 67 years apart in different cemeteries, kilometres away from each other. “It’s very weird,” Lavigne said. “I hope this river isn’t trying to tell me something.” WATCH | A headstone more than 100 years old pokes out of St. John River:A pair of grave discoveries made by Fredericton kayakerA kayaker out for a paddle discovered…

While getting a hold of these shows once required you to scour through sketchy torrent sites—or, further back in time, exchanging tapes with strangers in the mail—the entire process has now been streamlined into a slick mobile app. The only hard part is deciding what you should listen to first. DETROIT — After two years in the political wilderness, Democrats are feeling cautiously optimistic about turning the tide in the midterms. That has only intensified debate about the direction of the party. Nowhere is that debate more fraught now than Michigan, where Democrats are weighing two millennial candidates for an open Senate seat. One is Abdul El-Sayed, an epidemiologist firing up progressives by embracing “Medicare for All” and ripping the influence of corporate money in politics. The other is Haley Stevens, a four-term congresswoman who flipped a suburban House district and pledges to fight President Trump while still practicing a…

NEW YORK — When Carolina Flores saw two men in military uniforms approach her friend’s house across the street, she had a feeling something was wrong. Her friend Carol Acevedo’s daughter was serving in the Middle East. “Once they closed the door, we just heard her screaming,” Flores said. The men had come to deliver the news that 28-year-old Angel S. Rampersad, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, was killed July 17 in an attack on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. She was one of four American soldiers killed overseas in the last month. And just like…

It may be a meaningless pre-season match, but it is never a friendly when Chelsea face Tottenham. The fierce Premier League rivals meet in Sydney before jetting back home to finish their preparations ahead of the new campaign, but this will be a tough test for both dugouts. Roberto De Zerbi and Xabi Alonso meet for the first time in charge of their new clubs, and are expected to compete in a sold-out 80,000-seater stadium. That adds more stakes to the match, which should see both teams phase in more senior players, after offering their academies a lot of minutes…

Creating a government fund to own AI stock and benefit all Americans would require many hard choices. Should the U.S. government require artificial intelligence companies to transfer half of their stock to a sovereign wealth fund—a government-run fund that invests surplus state revenues for long-term savings and economic stability? About 7 in 10 Americans who were asked this question in a June 2026 survey answered that it should. The survey was conducted around the time that Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont introduced related legislation. His measure is intended to create government oversight over disruptive AI threats, while allowing all Americans…

Step into the woods above Hant’s Harbour, and you’ll find something out of a fairytale: a maze of moss-covered stone walls stretching off into the trees. The largest section is a metre high, almost two metres wide, and over 20 metres long, and, though the local nickname “The Great Wall” may be tongue-in-cheek, it does reflect the intensive labour that must have gone into building these structures.“The Great Wall really has a bit of an air of speculation and mystery about it that I think really gets people’s imaginations going,” said Marlayne Hardy, chair of the Willow Tree Heritage Society, a…
