It might be over three years since what had once been considered the final season of the beloved Ted Lasso, but thank goodness our favourite comfort show is back. No separation or awkwardness necessary; we can jump right back into where the characters were. Maybe a few years after Ted returned home to America, but they are all still the same. That is what is the most important thing about season four: We get to see the silliness of each one of them back on our screen for another eight-episode season.
Of course, some might say that Jason Sudeikis had things covered within the three seasons of the show, and that this fourth — the reincarnation, could we so claim — be unnecessary. That, however, need not take away from what this means for the fans. For that is the entire purpose of Ted Lasso’s return: For the fans.
After returning home to America at the end of season three, Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) is back attempting to try something new. AFC Richmond’s owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) decides to form the first-ever women’s team. Knowing who is best for the job, she invites Ted back to England to be her coach and confidant again. Thus presenting Ted with his biggest challenge yet: coaching the second division women’s team. Not only is he met with challenges along the way, but the rest of the original gang — Keeley Jones (Juno Temple), Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) — learn to leap and take chances they never would have before.
It was simple and inconsequential enough. Even as a huge fan myself, I can admit that season three ended on a good note; we did not need a fourth. But even so, in just four episodes we are reminded just why we are happy Sudeikis and crew brought our beloved Ted Lasso back.
After three seasons getting the Richmond FC’s men’s team to get along and work together, taking the “I” out of “team”, who knew what could have faced the original crew next. Add some spice and a little bit of femininity, and they bring him back to coach a second division women’s team. Rebecca, of course, is on her high horse and Keeley and Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift) keep her in check. Within moments, we are reminded of just how nice, warm-hearted, and kind Coach Lasso is, the reason we love him.
That is one-hundred per cent the reason why the fourth season, no matter where it may lead, is important. Three prior seasons of character development and love come straight back into the fourth. Everyone so easily steps back into their roles and is prepared (perhaps) for what is yet to come.
Take our beloved favourites and throw them into a team of women; somehow, an additional level of comedy is added. We thought we saw it all with the one-liners, fights and aggression from the men. But everyone forgets just how dramatic girls (women) can be. This is where we can see how much effort the team have put into their new script. Making sure each female element, whether good or bad, is used to make the most of the drama and challenges. Giving us the entertainment and giving Ted, Rebecca, Keeley and others the need to push through to the other side.
Leave it to passionate and empathetic television show (and yes, film) creatives to bring back such a beloved show and make it even more suspenseful. You never know where Ted Lasso or Richmond FC will go next, but what we know for sure is we are all on the path with them. Prepare yourself for what is yet to come and keep on believing.
