The upcoming two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and India is set to carry significant importance in the race to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes the series could prove to be a defining moment, especially for the hosts, who need a strong performance to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Aakash Chopra on how Sri Lanka can keep their chances alive in WTC 2025-27

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra explained that Sri Lanka have little room for error if they want to stay in the hunt for the WTC final. While acknowledging that the Lankan side still has an opportunity, he stressed that only a clean sweep over India would give them the momentum and points needed to remain competitive.

Chopra pointed out that if Sri Lanka manage to defeat India 2-0, they would climb to fourth place in the World Test Championship standings with 61 percentage points. Such a jump would strengthen their position and keep them in the race as the cycle progresses. However, he also noted that failing to achieve that result could leave Sri Lanka once again falling short of making a serious push for the final, describing it as another case of coming close without reaching the destination.

“If we lose 2-0, we will remain at only 39 percentage points and Sri Lanka will jump to 61 percentage points, and they will be No. 4. Sri Lanka will be in the run if they beat India 2-0. Then they have a realistic chance of going forward, or else it’s a so-near-yet-so-far story for them,” Chopra said.

Current WTC standings make the series crucial

The WTC table reflects just how important the upcoming series is for both teams. India currently occupy fifth place with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka sit just below them in sixth with 41.67. Sri Lanka have played four matches in the current WTC cycle, registering one victory, one defeat and two draws. Although they remain behind India at present, the home series offers them an ideal opportunity to improve their standing.

For India, led by Shubman Gill, the challenge will be to avoid dropping valuable points away from home. A poor result in Sri Lanka could dent their own qualification hopes while simultaneously boosting those of their opponents.

Galle set to host the opening Test

The first Test of the highly anticipated series will begin in Galle on August 15, with both teams eager to make a positive start. The conditions in Sri Lanka are traditionally known to favour spin, making team selection and execution crucial over the course of the two matches.

With valuable WTC points at stake, every session of the series could have a direct impact on the qualification race. While India will aim to strengthen their position in the standings, Sri Lanka know that a dominant 2-0 triumph could revive their dream of reaching the World Test Championship final and keep them firmly in the race for cricket’s biggest Test prize.
